Each phase produces a deliverable that must exist before the next phase starts, and this guide names the deliverable and the exit check for all seven. The order holds whether a team runs the phases once in sequence or repeats them every two weeks.

What is the software development life cycle?

The software development life cycle (SDLC) is a framework that breaks software delivery into defined phases, each with its own deliverable and sign-off point. It tells a team what happens next and who owns it. It also defines what “done” means at each step.

The SDLC describes the phases. Models such as Waterfall and Agile decide how a team sequences or repeats them, which is why SDLC is neither Waterfall nor Agile. For in-depth details, see our software development lifecycle guide.

What are the 7 phases of the SDLC?

The seven SDLC phases are planning, requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. The team defines the problem and the scope, then runs a feasibility study that covers technical and financial risk. Project managers, product managers, and business sponsors own this phase.

Deliverable: a project charter with scope, budget, timeline, and feasibility assessment

Exit when: the sponsor has approved scope and budget in writing

Watch for: a budget approved before anyone checked that the system you plan to integrate has an API

Security: list the compliance obligations and the sensitivity of the data the software will hold

Phase 2: Requirements Analysis

Requirements analysis turns a business problem into a specification someone can build against. Business analysts gather needs from stakeholders and end users through interviews, surveys, and focus groups. They separate must-have features from nice-to-have ones and write acceptance criteria, which are testable statements that define “working.”

Deliverable: a requirements specification with acceptance criteria, checked for accuracy, completeness, and feasibility

Exit when: stakeholders sign off, and each requirement traces to a business objective

Watch for: a pile of feature requests where a description of the workflow should be. A feature list describes a product, and a workflow describes your business.

Security: write abuse cases next to use cases, so security has acceptance criteria too

Boehm and Basili (Computer, January 2001) reported that fixing a problem after delivery is often 100 times costlier than fixing it during requirements and design. The same paper adds a caveat: for small, non-critical systems, the ratio is closer to 5:1. Boehm and Basili (Computer, January 2001) also found projects spend roughly 40 to 50% of effort on avoidable rework, which is the cost the process is fighting.

Phase 3: Design

Design turns the requirements into a blueprint developers can code from. Architects choose the architecture and tech stack and produce a high-level design, which names the components and technology choices. They also produce a low-level design, which sets the logic and database details inside each component.

Deliverable: a software design document covering architecture, data model, API contracts, and UI designs

Exit when: the design has been reviewed, and a threat model exists

Watch for: screens designed before the data model. In our experience, a data model reworked after launch is among the costliest fixes in software.

Security: build the threat model now, because design decisions are the most expensive to reverse

Designers add data flow diagrams, entity-relationship diagrams, and interface mockups. In TekRevol’s judgment, some guides place the high-level design in planning. The work is the same, and only the label moves.

Phase 4: Development

Development writes the code. Developers build against the design document and the team’s coding standards, and they commit to version control. Peers review each change before it merges.

Boehm and Basili (Computer, January 2001) found that peer reviews catch about 60% of software defects. That makes peer review one of the most cost-effective quality practices in software development.

Deliverable: working code merged into the main branch

Exit when: the feature is code-complete and peer-reviewed

Watch for: peer review treated as a formality, and long-running branches that make merging painful

Security: scan third-party dependencies for known vulnerabilities, and keep secrets out of the repository

Third-party code is a large part of the risk. Veracode’s 2026 State of Software Security report found that 66% of the most severe, longest-lived vulnerabilities come from third-party libraries and open source dependencies.

Phase 5: Testing

Testing verifies that the software meets the requirements and does not break what already worked. QA engineers and developers run unit tests on single components, integration tests on the links between them, and system tests on the whole build. The business then runs user acceptance testing (UAT) against the acceptance criteria.

Testers log each bug with its symptoms, the steps to reproduce it, and its impact. Developers fix it, and testers retest until the requirement is met.

Deliverable: test results, a defect log, and UAT sign-off

Exit when: the coverage target is met, and no critical defects remain open

Watch for: testing compressed because development ran late. The schedule slips either way, and the only choice is whether it slips before or after users see the problem.

Security: run static application security testing (SAST), which scans source code without running it, and dynamic testing (DAST), which attacks the running application

Phase 6: Deployment

Deployment releases tested software to production users, shifting the work from a project to a live product. The team packages the build, migrates data, sets up the production environment, and closely monitors performance after release. Users may also need manuals or training.

Deliverable: a released build, a rollback plan, and a runbook

Exit when: the release is live, and smoke tests pass in production

Watch for: no rollback plan

Security: use least-privilege access and a secrets manager, and sign release artifacts

Phase 7: Maintenance

Maintenance keeps the software working and useful after launch. Teams fix bugs, apply security patches and framework updates, answer user feedback, and ship improvements. In TekRevol’s judgment, it is the longest phase, and it ends only when the software is retired.

Maintenance also includes planning long-term upgrades or replacement. Glass states that maintenance typically consumes about 40 to 80 percent (60 percent average) of software costs. Our custom software development cost guide gives a starting point of 15% to 25% of build cost a year for maintenance and warns that a proposal with no maintenance detail is incomplete.

Deliverable: patches, updates, and a system that stays supported

Exit when: it does not exit; each release gets its own review

Watch for: a budget that covers the build and nothing after it

Security: keep a patch schedule, monitor for newly published vulnerabilities, and keep an incident response runbook

How do SDLC models change the phases?

SDLC models decide how a team moves through the seven phases, and the phases themselves stay the same. Waterfall runs them once in sequence, and Agile repeats them every one to four weeks.

Model

How it runs the phases

Best for

Waterfall

Once, in strict order, with gate approvals

Fixed scope and regulated builds

Agile

Repeats all phases in short iterations

Evolving products with engaged stakeholders

Iterative

Builds a rough version, then refines it in cycles

Large systems whose requirements firm up over time

Spiral

Loops through the phases in risk order

High-risk systems that are costly to get wrong

V-Model

Pairs a test phase with every design phase

Safety-critical systems that need traceability

Pick Waterfall or V-Model when requirements are fixed and audited, and Agile when they will change as users respond.

Partner with TekRevol to build your software

TekRevol is a custom software development company that engineers software around one organization’s workflows.
